Meet The Teacher

Some serious matters

1. When and how did you start dancing?

I have been dancing for as long as I remember. As a child I never stopped moving and so dance was a great way of channelling that energy into something creative. It wasn’t until I was a little older that I began to understand how I could fuse my need for a physical outlet with my creativity, into one artform; dance.  Now a days, I get itchy if I haven’t moved in a few days.

2. Preferred yoga style?

It always depends on how I’m feeling. I love improvisation because it allows me to be totally free and follow what intrigues me about my movement in that second. I often come across new and interesting movement pathways in my body. In saying this, sometimes a good old contemporary technique class is just what I need to whip my body into shape!

3. Tip for practitioners

There are so many different styles and teachers out there. Keep shopping around until you find what works for you. Remember; especially when you’re improvising, it’s never about what you look like, rather the journey that you took to get there and how it feels in your own body.

4. Your yoga influencer/Teacher

I worked with Israeli choreographer Oded Ronen in 2014. He was the one who introduced me to Gaga technique which totally changed my life. He taught me that it’s not about how the body looks, rather where the movement is coming from, internally. Listening to your body and allowing the movement to burst from within, up to the surface. I have tried to feed this way of thinking and moving into how I approach all other forms of dance.

5. Teacher/s you follow in Berlin

Lots of Gaga classes across the city. Erol Alexandrov and Evangelos Poulinas are two of my favourites, when I need a hard, floorwork class.

Some interesting matters

1. Morning routine

I try to start the day with a lot lemon honey and ginger tea to boost my immune system. I make sure that I always eat a healthy, savoury breakfast to set myself up for the day.

2. Nutrition

This is something I’m very passionate about. I’m not strictly Vegan but I try to eat as clean as possible. Lots of fruit and veg and not too many processed foods. I do listen to my body for the odd occasion I’m craving some good quality red meat!

3. Favorite book/movie/music/café/restaurant?

Favourite music artists would definitely be Bon Iver and Ólafur Arnalds. I am a mad Harry Potter fan, even if it is a little childish!

4. Hobbies

Playing piano, travelling, cooking, writing, caring for my plants.

5. Detox, yes/no, which?

I personally don’t detox. I try to keep my body fairly detoxified by keeping my diet clean and exercise up. I think its important to find a balance that works well for you. And if that’s a detox, then go for it!

Just for fun...
